CLASSIFICATION OF SNEHANA-
1.) Internal oleation-

2) External oleation/massage/abhyanga

Vamana therapyis used when an aggravatedKapha dosha is causing diseaseorthe dominant kapha doshawith pitta dosha causediseases.There are certainlimitations and contraindications.
Thetherapy is suggested indiarrhea, dysentery, feverof recent origin cough, cold,urinary tractdisorders anorexia, skin disorders, respiratory disorder, indigestiongoiter, fibroid, filariasis,etc.
Patientswith kapha dosha belownormalshould not be treated withvammanatherapies.Women pregnant, who do not havesnehana karma, strong agni(digestive system) people who areunder stress, or hungry and children, elderly, weak person, enlargedcolon, intestinal parasiteslarger prostate and othersin these cases, vamana karmashould be avoided.
Virechan (purgation)is the 2nd karmaofpanchakarma. It isa widelyused therapy, especially indiseases caused due topitta dosha that is aggravated. The pittadoesha is removedwith force via the anal pathway.The doshas are eliminated withless effort and less hasslecompared to vamana karma. Itcan also be usedinvata-pitta or pitta-kaphadoshas, where pitta is predominant. Thetherapy requires following a particulardiet regimens to achieve thenormaldiet and to completethetherapy.
HERBS USED AS VIRECHAK DRAVYA
Virechan drugs include milk, takra, gavakshi, vacha, punarnava, shala, panchmoola, saptala, haritaki, kashmarya, draksha, jyotishmati, vibhitaki, amalaki, abhaya etc.
Depending upon the medicine administeredvirechan comes in two forms-
1.) Snigdha virechan- meaning ofthe word “snigdha” isoily. It isa reference to pitta when itislinked tovata dosha.
2.) Rooksha virechan- itis a sign that pitta islinked to kapha dosha.
Virechanis often associated withgout, piles, constipation jaundice, liver diseases and splenomegaly. Ascites,dysuria and pain in the largein the intestine, diseases of the urogenitalsystem infemales and males, nasal bleeding etc.
Diarrhea, poor digestion or dysentery, an ulcerin the rectum, emaciatedpatient, following excessiveoleation treatment, wounds etcarethe cases wherevirechanisn’t indicated.
3) BASTI KARMA
Inthe past,thebladder (basti) wasused asequipmenttothe enema.The name for thisprocedure is basti Karma.
Basti isan exclusive treatmentforayurvedic panchakarma.The medicated ghee,decoction, oil and other ingredientsare administeredthrough the rectal,vaginal and urinary channels.
