Delhi: A Melting Pot of Food Culture

If you really want to know a city inside-out, the best way to do so is to romance its food. While some of the best dishes may be discovered by following the local crowds into non-descript lanes, too many lie unattended in the faraway corners of a buffet. Well, it is for a fact that Delhi loves its food. However, more than that, it loves sharing its food with those who love all things delicious. While a lot of dishes mentioned have their origins in other cities, Dilwalon ki Dilli is all about the amalgamation of cultures – about taking the best and making them its own. So, without further ado, here is a list of the most famous dishes of Delhi that you must absolutely try out!

Chole Bhature

Whether you want a scrumptious breakfast, lunch or a simple snack, you can find this particular dish in almost every corner of the city, dishing out round and ever-so-tasty bhaturas, fresh and hot out of the wok. To be fair, the magic lies in the chole. From Baba Nagpal Corner in Lajpat Nagar to Pind Balluchi at Select City Walk – if you happen to be anywhere near Saket or Lajpat Nagar, you definitely should try these out! No questions asked.

Butter chicken

Who doesn’t love butter chicken! History has it, Kundanlal Gujral of Moti Mahal had invented this dish and introduced it to Delhi in the 1950s. While Moti Mahal is no longer the go-to place for your butter chicken fix, Punjab Grill, one of the best Punjabi restaurants in Delhi, located at Select City Walk does a sinful version. However, if you really want to experience the dhaba-style butter chicken, you must tip-toe your way to Rajinder da Dhaba, located at Safdarjung Enclave.

Parathas

If you have friends, colleagues or relatives staying in Delhi, all you have to do is simply ask them about the diverse range of parathas that helped them get by all these years. Although parathas, in all its avatars make us feel fulfilled, stuffed parathas at regular stalls have always ruled and shall continue to do so. While the country is teeming with numerous Paranthe wali Gali’s, for nostalgia’s sake, you must make it a point to head to Qutub Institutional Area, where almost any student would be hospitable enough to guide you to Laxman Dhaba. Once you reach, you must make sure that you try out their Keema paratha with a plate of Maggi (because, why not!).

Delhi is a melting pot of cultures across the country and thus flavours and cuisines. While there is so much more to explore and discover in the city besides the above, a lot of fresh and new dishes have found their way to the city from shores far, far away. However, these dishes have miles to go before making their way to this list. Until then, give the 3 listed above a shot to get to know the city. And believe us when we say it, you are in for a delicious ride!
