We spoke with Paramita Das, a dog trainer and behaviorist in Kolkata for a discussion on how to tackle problems with dog behavior and the growing opportunities in the dog training bangkok field of dog training and dog behavior.

Edugraph: What exactly is it that is the task of a dog behaviorist?

Paramita Das Dog behaviorists help pet owners assist them in understanding the issues with their dogs. They also develop a program to assist in addressing and managing these issuesTo do so, these experts study the patterns of behavior of dogs, observe the interaction among dogs and owners and interpret and observe the body language of dogs in different situations.

What brought you into this field?

PD: Having spent more than two decades in the world of work, I wanted to pursue my love of dealing with dog owners. I realized that aside from loving dogs, it’s crucial to learn to understand their needs as they’re an entirely different species than humans.

When I completed my initial dog trainer’s course, decided to help pet parents train their dogs using an approach that is positive and gentle. My aim was to ensure that they as well as their dog family members have a an enjoyable lifeThen, I went on to study courses on aggression and canine behavior and aggression.

What are your daily activities in this profession?

My day-to-day activities include teaching puppies and adult dogs to be great companions, training dogs to play games and working with families who are facing behavior issues with their dogs. I also deal with chewing and destructive behavior as well as separation anxiety issues. toilet training and fear-related issues, as well as leash walking and aggression issues.

What is the most frequent challenge you’re facing?

PD: While most humans believe that the dog is the problem, a lot of issues primarily stem from dog owners. There is an absence of knowledge of why dogs behave a certain way and how we might have contributed to the behavior. In today’s busy and hectic pace of life, our time or patience is a bit lowThis is among the major challengesOnce the family has invested in managing the pets they love in a disciplined manner, things will go more smoothly.

Do you have a list of the methods you employ while working with dogs with behavioral issues?

PD: I usually employ techniques to help the pet’s family members understand the causes why their dog is exhibiting behavior problemsIt’s essential to let the entire family participate in obedience classes so they can ensure that their dog obeys at all times and in acceptable ways. Pet owners need to have some influence over their dog’s behavior in a positive manner. My role is to create an intervention program to strengthen the bonds between the dogs and family members.

What are the common mistakes pet owners make playing with their pets?

A lot of pet owners regard their dog as humans or a toy. A dog is a living creature — an entirely different species. Human beings are primates, and they are canids. Although dogs are among our best friends, some pet owners should recognize that they still belong to an animal species that is differentTherefore, it’s essential for them to know the canine species. Families should know everything about the breed of their dog and utilize that knowledge in a positive way.

What advice would you offer to someone planning to bring a puppy back to the home?

PD: Understand that your dog is a different animal and that you need to devote a significant amount of time and effortKnow your dog better –educate your puppy on acceptable manners, take him/her out for walks, play acceptable games with them and be part of activities he/she enjoys.

Prepare for financial obligations like vet bills, expenses in case your dog gets sick grooming and boarding fees during your absence or movingAlso, it is important to establish the right support system ready in case of any emergencies.

Overall, I believe you should be prepared for a long-term commitment of 12 to 14 years bringing an animalWe can pursue our personal interests and hobbies, but a dog’s reliance is on his family members to ensure a happy life. Don’t let your dog down in this.

What advice would you give to those who are young and have pets?

PD: Be involved in your dog’s lifeBe a part of the things that your dog actually enjoys. If you have Labradors, go for a swim. If you own an Beagle or Indie, take him/her for sniffing games in a park. Spend moment with your furry friend to develop a strong relationshipSpending time with your pet is the most important thing.

What are the possible academic and professional options for someone who desires to become a behaviorist or trainer?

PD: There are classes that you can take to learn the information and skills required to become a professional dog behaviorist. I have attended courses run by Shirin Merchant, who is one of leaders in the field of dog behavior and training in India. I have also completed courses taught by John Rogerson, who is an internationally renowned trainer of dogs and behaviorist. The two trainers Shirin and John utilize gentle and positive training methods that focus on building a strong bond between the dog and his/her family.

What are the careers one can follow while playing with pets?

PD The world is full of opportunities in this growing field. People are becoming more conscious about the necessity to take the pets they love to specialists nowadaysThe roles of a vet groomer, trainer, and behaviorist are some of the most frequently used choicesYou could also operate a boarding centre for dogsAnimal rescue and working at shelters is another optionWith the right training, you can also become a pet nutrition consultant.
